Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate knowledge and attitudes about AIDS among Korean dental students. The study population surveyed by means of a self-administered questionnaire consisted of 278 dental students of 3 dental schools in Korea. Generally, the students possessed high level knowledge about AIDS. However, there was a lower degree of knowledge at some questionnaire about cause, transmission, treatment and prevention. Over one-third of the respondents said they were afraid of getting AIDS. The majority of respondents had a reluctance toward HIV infected patients. Almost all said that they felt the fear of infection if they had to treat HIV infected persons.
Nevertheless, two-thirds(64.4%) of students had a responsibility to treat persons with HIV like any other patients. About two-thirds of respondents wanted additional education about AIDS. It is concluded that not only factual scientific, and medical informations known about AIDS but also ethical and professional responsibilities of being a dentist must be instilled by dental school education and post-graduate continuing educational courses.
